The Pulse-Journal was the former name of a weekly broadsheet newspaper that ceased publication under that name with its January 17, 2013 printed editions. It was founded in Mason, Ohio and owned by Cox Media Group.
In November, 2012, Cox Media Group announced in a letter to advertisers that the paper would be combined with other Cox weeklies "The Western Star" and the "Fairfield Echo" into "Today's Pulse of Warren County" and "Today's Pulse of Butler County" beginning with print editions on January 20, 2012. Subsequently, it was announced that the papers would be branded "Today's Pulse of Warren County, a product of The Western Star" and "Today's Pulse of Butler County, a product of the Fairfield Echo". According to CMG, these are "two brand new weekly newspapers delivered to communities currently served by The Western Star, Fairfield Echo, and The Pulse-Journal" and "The Pulse county news editions will replace The Western Star." The new papers are delivered on Sundays and, according to Cox, reach more than 86,000 homes.
The two editions cover news, politics, local events, entertainment, and sports in southern Warren and eastern Butler counties in Ohio.
"Today's Pulse of Butler County" and "Today's Pulse of Warren County" share staff and resources with other Cox newspapers in the area, including the JournalNews in Hamilton, Ohio, the Middletown Journal in Middletown, Ohio, and the "Dayton Daily News" in Dayton, Ohio.
The original newspaper was founded as the free "Mason Shopping Guide" in the 1960's out of the Mason home of founders Pat and Delores Diangelo, and the paper was based out of an office in downtown Mason from the late 1960's to the late 1990's, when it moved to a shopping plaza south of downtown. Several years later the office was combined with other Cox papers in a facility in Liberty Township, Ohio.
Upon becoming a broadsheet in the 1970's, the paper was known as "The Pulse", and later "The Pulse-Journal" when it became a sister paper of the Thomson Corporation-owned JournalNews.
In 2007, the Mason/Deerfield edition under editor Thomas Barr and managing editor Chris Celek garnered several national awards. It earned three Suburban Newspapers of America (now Local Media Association) first place honors as Non-Daily Newspaper of the Year, and also first place for Best Sports Section and for Best Headline. Also in 2007, it named PulseJournal.com Best Local Community Website. In 2006, the paper's Mason/Deerfield edition, under the same editors, was named Best Non-Daily Newspaper in the nation by Inland Press Foundation.
