Context
The story is based upon Charlotte Brontë's experiences in Brussels, where she studied as a language student and was a teacher in 1842. Much of the same subject matter of The Professor would be reworked from the perspective of a female student into Brontë's later novel Villette, which met—and continues to attract—much higher critical acclaim.
