The News of Cumberland County

The News of Cumberland County, formerly known as the Bridgeton News, is a daily regional newspaper in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. Its main competitors are The Philadelphia Inquirer across the Delaware River in Pennsylvania and the Courier-Post in South Jersey. It is a sister newspaper to both the Gloucester County Times and Today's Sunbeam (in Salem County), as all were owned by Advance Publications.

Originally founded in 1879 as the Bridgeton Evening News and then known as the Bridgeton News, it concentrated most of its news on the city of Bridgeton itself. However, it also produced a zoned edition for the neighboring city of Millville. Situated in the southwestern portion of the state, The News of Cumberland County has easy access to both Philadelphia and the Jersey shore communities, which include Ocean City, Atlantic City, and Wildwood, among others.

The Schofield family sold the paper to the American Publishing Company (later Hollinger International) in 1989. MediaNews Group bought the Bridgeton Evening News in 1996. Advance Publications bought MediaNews' New Jersey and Pennsylvania newspapers in 2000.

On November 3, 2008, Bridgeton effectively ceased having its own newspaper when the Bridgeton News was printed for the first time as the consolidated regional paper, The News of Cumberland County.

Famous quotes containing the words news and/or county:

Where village statesmen talked with looks profound,
And news much older than their ale went round.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774)

I know this well, that if one thousand, if one hundred, if ten men whom I could name,—if ten honest men only,—ay, if one HONEST man, in this State of Massachusetts, ceasing to hold slaves, were actually to withdraw from this copartnership, and be locked up in the county jail therefor, it would be the abolition of slavery in America. For it matters not how small the beginning may seem to be: what is once well done is done forever.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
