The Merlin Mystery - Puzzle

Puzzle

The puzzle of the book took much after its predecessor Masquerade in that the plot bore no relevance to the solution, and that the answer was found in the intricate illustrations as well as the borders of every page. The borders were littered with a variety of possible objects to include in the final spell, including Alchemy symbols as well as the element symbols Au, Pb, and Ag, Clocks featuring various times, Latin names for various plants, and symbols for directions and movements. Also on these pages were a variety of images of landmarks from around England, France, and Prague, as well as such symbols of English culture as Beefeaters and Toby Jugs.

Famous quotes containing the word puzzle:

The at present unutterable things we may find somewhere uttered. These same questions that disturb and puzzle and confound us have in their turn occurred to all the wise men; not one has been omitted; and each has answered them, according to his ability, by his words and his life.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

—My good friend, quoth I—as sure as I am I—and you are you
—And who are you? said he.—Don’t puzzle me; said I.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

Waiting for the race to become official, he began to feel as if he had as much effect on the final outcome of the operation as a single piece of a jumbo jigsaw puzzle has to its predetermined final design. Only the addition of the missing fragments of the puzzle would reveal if the picture was as he guessed it would be.
    Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)
