Influence
The novelist Joseph Conrad was influenced by the Malay Archipelago, using it as a source for novels including Lord Jim.
More recently, the book has influenced The Song of the Dodo by David Quammen (1997), which discussed Wallace in the context of island biogeography; The Spice Islands Voyage by Tim Severin (1997) retraced Wallace's travels; and Archipelago: The Islands of Indonesia, by Gavan Daws (1999) which compared the environment described by Wallace with the state of the archipelago at that time. The Malay Archipelago is considered to be one of the most influential books ever written about the Indonesian islands.
The English comedian Bill Bailey travelled around Indonesia in the footsteps of Wallace for a two-part television programme on BBC Two, first broadcast in 2013, the centenary of Wallace's death.

Famous quotes containing the word influence:
“The private life of one man shall be a more illustrious monarchy, more formidable to its enemy, more sweet and serene in its influence to its friend, than any kingdom in history. For a man, rightly viewed, comprehendeth the particular natures of all men.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Constitutional statutes ... which embody the settled public opinion of the people who enacted them and whom they are to governcan always be enforced. But if they embody only the sentiments of a bare majority, pronounced under the influence of a temporary excitement, they will, if strenuously opposed, always fail of their object; nay, they are likely to injure the cause they are framed to advance.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“Cultural expectations shade and color the images that parents- to-be form. The baby product ads, showing a woman serenely holding her child, looking blissfully and mysteriously contented, or the television parents, wisely and humorously solving problems, influence parents-to-be.”
—Ellen Galinsky (20th century)
