The Lords of The New Church - History

History

Formed in 1982, the band comprised the punk pioneers Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys), Brian James (The Damned), Dave Tregunna (Sham 69) and Nick Turner (The Barracudas).

The band recorded three studio albums and one live album together before Bators ended the band onstage after a concert on 2 May 1989, at the London Astoria.

They had one surprise Top 40 hit in Canada in 1982 with the single "Open Your Eyes". A more contrived attempt to have a global hit with a parody cover version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" in 1985 proved less successful, but ironically remains one of the band's best known singles to date.

The band played a small, but important role in the film Tapeheads in 1988, with Bators playing a character called Garry "Dick Slammer" Fink.

The band's image blurred the lines of batcave rockers and glam punks such as Hanoi Rocks (vocalist Michael Monroe actually guested on one of the Lords' albums using the saxophone). For their album Is Nothing Sacred, Todd Rundgren collaborated on "Live for Today", a cover of a 1960s song by the Anglo-Italian band The Rokes (covered in English by The Grass Roots), producing and playing synthesizer. Their music was darker and more melodic than traditional punk.

Bators died after being struck by a car in Paris in 1990 and is roundly remembered as one of the very best front men in punk and post-punk rock.

Much like the original line up formed the band in The Portobello Gold Pub in London, Vocalist Stevenmarque and founding member Brian James reformed The Lords of the New Church in 2001 at an Irish pub in Austin Texas on St. Patricks Day before James' performance with MAD FOR THE RACKET with Wayne Kramer at SXSW. Other founding member Dave Tregunna was involved some months later. Two additional members, Jez and Ozzy from The Brian James Gang were recruited to complete the line up and armed with a modern and authentic approach that was true to the original Lords mantra: TRUTH IS THE SWORD OF US ALL, the band began rehearsals in Brighton, England. From the start the new members found it difficult to tolerate, the precious Stevenmarque and after some months on the road they began to loathe him and they subsequently quit an already misadventure packed 2002 European Tour without any notice; leaving two supporting roles to fill. Stevenmarque remembered keen Lords megafan Adam Becvare of The LustKillers and after discussion with Brian James, invited Adam to replace Jez. Becvare and Steve Murray, (replacing Ozzy,) committed to fill-in and ultimately became Lords in 2003. Becvare was especially well loved by fans on tour, as his ability to mimick Stiv's vocals on Lords classics was genuinely spot on. The lineup recorded the ten-song CD Hang On and toured Europe again in spring 2003. While the new songs were true to the new Lords ethos, they were outshined by audiences screaming for the old standards.

It became obvious after two tours that Lords fans hadn't any real interest in the new direction that Brian and Stevenmerque had originally envisioned as a next chapter for the band and really only wanted to remember and sing along to the original glory days hits of the 80's. Having never had the desire, (or for that matter the voice,) to recreate the impossibly enigmatic Stiv Bators; and always totally focused on the "new" Lords songs to a fault, Stevenmarque moved on to establish his own successful metal act, SM featuring lead guitarists China of Sinnistar and rock guitar legend Reeves Gabrels of David Bowie. He released his debut album MAD LOVE, which was among the best selling indie metal albums in 2006. SM's second and third releases: IN THE FLESH and WAKE THE DEAD followed with similar acclaim.

Unfortunately for fans, The Lords have yet to produce any new recorded music or toured in the ten years since Stevenmarque's departure.

Becvare went on to resurrected Vancouver's The Black Halos in 2004, writing and recording two albums, Alive Without Control and We Are Not Alone, and touring internationally.

The Lords of the New Church, fronted by Becvare, continue to perform live and to write new material when Becvare is not touring with The LustKillers.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

I assure you that in our next class we will concern ourselves solely with the history of Egypt, and not with the more lurid and non-curricular subject of living mummies.
Griffin Jay, and Reginald LeBorg. Prof. Norman (Frank Reicher)

Those who weep for the happy periods which they encounter in history acknowledge what they want; not the alleviation but the silencing of misery.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)
