Non Original Copies and Derivative Works
200px Billboard in Hokkaidō, Japan.Like other well known Japanese prints, the Great Wave has been frequently copied using the same techniques, as well as reproduced by photo-mechanical means. These copies are often confused with the authentic original print.
The print is one of the most reproduced artworks in the world, and was one of the subjects of the BBC documentary series, The Private Life of a Masterpiece, which detailed the fascination surrounding the work in the East and West, its influence, and the artist's insights into a number of different areas, as revealed through the piece.
The print is the subject of episode 93 of the BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 Objects, broadcast in September 2010.
The logo used by the Quiksilver clothing company was inspired by the Great Wave.
It appears as the Dynamic Painting in Animal Crossing: City Folk.
An artistic work named 'Uprisings' by Japanese/American Artist Kozyndan is based on the print, with the foam of the wave being replaced by bunnies

Famous quotes containing the words original, copies, derivative and/or works:
“Mother has always been a generic term synonymous with love, devotion, and sacrifice. Theres always been something mystical and reverent about them. Theyre the Walter Cronkites of the human race . . . infallible, virtuous, without flaws and conceived without original sin, with no room for ambivalence.”
—Erma Bombeck (20th century)
“The only good copies are those which make us see the absurdity of bad originals.”
—François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (16131680)
“Poor John Field!I trust he does not read this, unless he will improve by it,thinking to live by some derivative old-country mode in this primitive new country.... With his horizon all his own, yet he a poor man, born to be poor, with his inherited Irish poverty or poor life, his Adams grandmother and boggy ways, not to rise in this world, he nor his posterity, till their wading webbed bog-trotting feet get talaria to their heels.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“That mans best works should be such bungling imitations of Natures infinite perfection, matters not much; but that he should make himself an imitation, this is the fact which Nature moans over, and deprecates beseechingly. Be spontaneous, be truthful, be free, and thus be individuals! is the song she sings through warbling birds, and whispering pines, and roaring waves, and screeching winds.”
—Lydia M. Child (18021880)
