GSA was formed in 1982 by Michael Gorfaine and Samuel H. Schwartz, formerly of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), where Gorfaine served as co-director of the Los Angeles Membership office, and Schwartz ran the Film and Television Music Department.

GSA's clients have received the following awards and nominations through 2011:

96 Golden Globe Award nominations (19 wins)
47 BAFTA nominations (16 wins)

Of the 50 top-grossing films internationally of all time, 37 have been scored by GSA clients, including Avatar, Titanic, Toy Story 3, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

Of the 20 top-grossing films internationally for 2010, GSA clients were involved with seven:
