The Dutch House

The Dutch House at 20 Netherlands Road in Brookline, Massachusetts was originally built as an exhibition hall at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago (World's Columbian Exposition) where it served as the Dutch Cocoa House. It was a close copy of the Stadhuis (Town Hall) in Franeker, Friesland in Holland. The door frame, embellished with stone animals, is a replica of the Enkhuizen Orphanage. After the fair ended, the Dutch High Renaissance style building was dismantled brick by brick and reconstructed at its present location. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Netherlands Road was named in honor of the house.

Famous quotes containing the words dutch and/or house:

    ‘Tis probable Religion after this
Came next in order; which they could not miss.
How could the Dutch but be converted, when
The Apostles were so many fishermen?
Besides the waters of themselves did rise,
And, as their land, so them did re-baptize.
    Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)

Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer’; but you have made it a den of robbers.”
