The City (Vangelis Album) - Style

Style

Vangelis employs a wide range of styles, from jazz (2) and rock (3) to new age (5, 6). Instrument patches are all synthesizer-based, but sound very convincing (trumpet on 1, guitar on 3, cello on 8).

Although The City is the first album after Direct (1988), there is no mention of the "Direct series" as discussed in that album's sleeve notes. It can also not easily be linked with his subsequent work, such as the 1492: Conquest of Paradise soundtrack. Vangelis would later compose the soundtrack for Polanski's Bitter Moon film.

Famous quotes containing the word style:

We are often struck by the force and precision of style to which hard-working men, unpracticed in writing, easily attain when required to make the effort. As if plainness and vigor and sincerity, the ornaments of style, were better learned on the farm and in the workshop than in the schools. The sentences written by such rude hands are nervous and tough, like hardened thongs, the sinews of the deer, or the roots of the pine.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A style does not go out of style as long as it adapts itself to its period. When there is an incompatibility between the style and a certain state of mind, it is never the style that triumphs.
    Coco Chanel (1883–1971)

New is a word for fools in towns who think
Style upon style in dress and thought at last
    Must get somewhere.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
