The Chain - Television

Television

  • The ending bass line and guitar solo of "The Chain" was used as the theme song for the BBC's Formula One coverage (the programme was called Grand Prix) from 1978 until the BBC's loss of TV rights to ITV Sport in 1997. ITV did not continue its use as the opening theme. However, "The Chain" returned in 2009 as the F1 theme song after the BBC regained the broadcasting rights to Formula One from ITV. The full programme of Grand Prix was broadcast worldwide, and thus "The Chain" is associated with F1 not just in Britain but across the world.
  • The ending bass line was also featured in a British advertisement for the Fiat Supermirafiori in 1982, perhaps in recognition of the popularity of the song on BBC Sports programmes.
  • A cover of the song by the band Tantric was used as the theme song for the HBO Documentary series Family Bonds.

Famous quotes containing the word television:

Anyone afraid of what he thinks television does to the world is probably just afraid of the world.
    Clive James (b. 1939)

In full view of his television audience, he preached a new religion—or a new form of Christianity—based on faith in financial miracles and in a Heaven here on earth with a water slide and luxury hotels. It was a religion of celebrity and showmanship and fun, which made a mockery of all puritanical standards and all canons of good taste. Its standard was excess, and its doctrines were tolerance and freedom from accountability.
    New Yorker (April 23, 1990)

So by all means let’s have a television show quick and long, even if the commercial has to be delivered by a man in a white coat with a stethoscope hanging around his neck, selling ergot pills. After all the public is entitled to what it wants, isn’t it? The Romans knew that and even they lasted four hundred years after they started to putrefy.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)
