The film is based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. "Basically," said Michael Hirsh, "we borrowed from because we thought it would be interesting for the Care Bears to go into a classic adventure and get involved with classic characters." Likewise, Patrick Loubert said, "By combining Alice and those wonderful Lewis Carroll characters from Wonderland with the Care Bears, the new film will now introduce all these magnificent characters to a whole new generation." Parts of this film are inspired by the literary works The Prisoner of Zenda and Androcles and the Lion, and their cinematic counterparts from 1937 and 1952 respectively. According to Johanna Steinmetz of the Chicago Tribune, Wonderland borrowed some elements from The Wizard of Oz.
