Music

As of the fall of 2007, all Anderson students in the fourth and fifth grades choose and study an orchestral instrument — either woodwind, string, brass, or percussion. After fifth grade, students may elect to continue into the AMS advanced orchestra. With about 60 students from AMS studying an instrument, Anderson has about 170 students in the school instrumental program. Dr. Amy A. V. Musick designed and headed the program through the 2009-10 schoolyear to be proceeded by the current music teachers: Mr. Brian Shaheen, M.A. and Ms. Sarah Prusasky, M.A., who continue to grow Dr. Musick's orchestral program. In addition, Anderson teaches music literacy to all K–2 students. Currently, second graders are introduced to guitars and third graders are introduced to recorders. Independent of the Anderson music program, about one-third of Anderson students (2007) study music privately. The AMS chorus is an in-school elective and the AMS rock band program is extra-curricular.

Spirit, interscholastic sports and student life

In the fall of 2005, by way of a Student Council sponsored mascot-logo art competition, the AMS students chose as its mascot a dragon designed by Lisa Howell, who at that time was an 8th grader. A year earlier, Anderson adopted red and white as the only unused color combination in a middle school basketball league.

War is a most uneconomical, foolish, poor arrangement, a bloody enrichment of that soil which bears the sweet flower of peace ...
