Thane Creek

Thane Creek, also known as Vashi Creek, is part of the estuary of the Ulhas River in western India opening into Mumbai Harbour. It comprises the area stretching from Mumbra Retibunder to the Mankhurd-Vashi Bridge. It has been recognised as an Important Bird Area by the Bombay Natural History Society, as it is home to flamingoes and several other migratory and wading birds. The stretch of the Ulhas River that turns north towards Vasai Creek is also mistakenly referred to as Thane Creek. Thane Creek was an important harbour in olden times, with the ports of Kopri and Kalyan served by it, though they have long been silted up. The city of Thane lies at the head of Thane Creek.

Famous quotes containing the word creek:

It might be seen by what tenure men held the earth. The smallest stream is mediterranean sea, a smaller ocean creek within the land, where men may steer by their farm bounds and cottage lights. For my own part, but for the geographers, I should hardly have known how large a portion of our globe is water, my life has chiefly passed within so deep a cove. Yet I have sometimes ventured as far as to the mouth of my Snug Harbor.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
