Thai Folklore

Thai folklore are the various manifestations of folklore of the Thai people. Most folk beliefs have a regional background, for they originated in the rural countryside of Thailand. With the passing of time, and through the influence of the media, large areas of Thai folklore have become part of the wider popular Thai culture.

Phraya Anuman Rajadhon (1888—1969) was the first Thai scholar who seriously studied local folkloristics. He took copious notes on humble details of his culture such as the charms used by Thai shopkeepers to attract customers. He also studied in depth the oral literature related to the different village spirits and ghosts of Thai lore.

Famous quotes containing the word folklore:

So, too, if, to our surprise, we should meet one of these morons whose remarks are so conspicuous a part of the folklore of the world of the radio—remarks made without using either the tongue or the brain, spouted much like the spoutings of small whales—we should recognize him as below the level of nature but not as below the level of the imagination.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
