Tewkesbury Medieval Festival - Town of Tewkesbury

Town of Tewkesbury

Although the town council of Tewkesbury plays no part in organising the festival, it has supported the event by giving it grants (the amount for 2005 and 2008 was £1,000 each). Most of the money for organising the festival is recouped from "tithes paid by the ", which at times proved insufficient to cover the expenses; the event was operating in the red for 2002–2004. Under encouragement from the Companions of the Black Bear and the Chamber of Commerce, the town's traders support the event by decorating their shops and dressing up in medieval-period costumes. The pubs and restaurants serve medieval-style fare as well. A free bus service connects the town and the festival.

Famous quotes containing the words town of and/or town:

    Mr. Mum’s Rudesheimer
And the church of St. Geryon
    Are the two things alone
    That deserve to be known
In the body-and-soul-stinking town of Cologne.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

If the street life, not the Whitechapel street life, but that of the common but so-called respectable part of town is in any city more gloomy, more ugly, more grimy, more cruel than in London, I certainly don’t care to see it. Sometimes it occurs to one that possibly all the failures of this generation, the world over, have been suddenly swept into London, for the streets are a restless, breathing, malodorous pageant of the seedy of all nations.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)
