Modern Experimental Tests
This small mechanical steam-powered device developed by Tesla known as the "earthquake machine" was reported to produce earthquake-like effects, but has never been replicated. In 2006, the MythBusters tested a small machine based on the same principle. The Mythbusters made a retort but powered by electricity rather than steam. It produced vibrations in a large structure detectable 100 feet away, but no significant shaking, and they judged the effect to be a busted myth.

Famous quotes containing the words modern, experimental and/or tests:
“And of the other things death is a new office building filled with modern furniture,
A wise thing, but which has no purpose for us.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“Philosophers of science constantly discuss theories and representation of reality, but say almost nothing about experiment, technology, or the use of knowledge to alter the world. This is odd, because experimental method used to be just another name for scientific method.... I hope [to] initiate a Back-to-Bacon movement, in which we attend more seriously to experimental science. Experimentation has a life of its own.”
—Ian Hacking (b. 1936)
“Letters have to pass two tests before they can be classed as good: they must express the personality both of the writer and of the recipient.”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
