Terry Sutton

Terence Richard Sutton (Terry) (born in Colchester on 25 August 1950) is a British politician.

Sutton was a Conservative councillor for the Berechurch ward of Colchester Borough Council. He was elected to the council in 1990 and he represented Berechurch for over 16 years.

Sutton was elected Mayor of Colchester in May 2005 and served a 1-year term to 2006. During his term as Mayor, he raised money for the "Mayor's Charities" that included the Army Benevolent Fund, Essex Wildlife Trust, Colchester United Community Sports Trust, Cancer Research UK, Christian Youth Outreach, and the Colchester Scout Band.

Sutton's invited guests at Colchester's civic Oyster Feast held in October 2005 included environmentalist Professor Jules Pretty, Baroness Shirley Williams, actor Ian Lavender, and former England cricketer Freddie Trueman. Representatives from Colchester's twin towns Avignon, Wetzlar and Imola were guests at the festival.

Both Terry and his son Craig Sutton were originally elected as Liberal Democrat Councillors. They defected to the Conservative group on 9 July 2007. The reasons given for their defections included the Conservatives' positive vision for Colchester, negativity within the Lib Dem group and the Lib Dem MP's interference in the Lib Dem Council group.

Craig lost his seat in the 2008 local elections, being pushed into third place behind victorious Labour candidate Kim A Naish and Liberal Democrat candidate John W Stevens.
