Telugu Brahmins

Telugu Brahmin are members of the Brahmin community who speak Telugu. They mainly hail from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, although several have migrated to the rest of India as well as to countries around the world. One of the earliest members of the Brahmin community from Andhra is Gautama Maharishi after whom Godavari took its name Gautami.

The Satavahana dynasty, founded by Srimukha (221-198 BC), ruled for five centuries and extended over Andhra and central India supported Vedic religion and its traditions. The Satavahana dynasty granted land to the Brahmins. Sangam era Chera, Chola and Pandya kings in the deep south also gave land to Brahmins.
