Accusations of White Ethnocentrism

Some American media outlets object to telenovelas of Latin American and U.S. Hispanic media on grounds that they are not representative of the racial makeup of the countries where they are produced, as they tend to have white, blond or blue-eyed people in major roles. However, blond women seem to have a tendency to be villains in telenovelas. Moreover, it is not unusual at all for a protagonist to be moreno/morena (brownish skin). However, it's been noted that characters within telenovelas that are economically successful tend to look more Caucasian. Criticisms have led to see this as a form of acceptance towards Caucasian models of beauty (present since Colonial times), and as a form of acceptance of inequality in terms of class, race, and gender (Uribe, p. 68-72).

Famous quotes containing the words accusations and/or white:

In marriage there are no manners to keep up, and beneath the wildest accusations no real criticism. Each is familiar with that ancient child in the other who may erupt again.... We are not ridiculous to ourselves. We are ageless. That is the luxury of the wedding ring.
    Enid Bagnold (1889–1981)

Few white citizens are acquainted with blacks other than those projected by the media and the so—called educational system, which is nothing more than a system of rewards and punishments based upon one’s ability to pledge loyalty oaths to Anglo culture. The media and the “educational system” are the prime sources of racism in the United States.
    Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
