Telenovelas - Accusations of White Ethnocentrism

Accusations of White Ethnocentrism

Some American media outlets object to telenovelas of Latin American and U.S. Hispanic media on grounds that they are not representative of the racial makeup of the countries where they are produced, as they tend to have white, blond or blue-eyed people in major roles. However, blond women seem to have a tendency to be villains in telenovelas. Moreover, it is not unusual at all for a protagonist to be moreno/morena (brownish skin). However, it's been noted that characters within telenovelas that are economically successful tend to look more Caucasian. Criticisms have led to see this as a form of acceptance towards Caucasian models of beauty (present since Colonial times), and as a form of acceptance of inequality in terms of class, race, and gender (Uribe, p. 68-72).

Famous quotes containing the words accusations and/or white:

This might be the end of the world. If Joe lost we were back in slavery and beyond help. It would all be true, the accusations that we were lower types of human beings. Only a little higher than apes. True that we were stupid and ugly and lazy and dirty and, unlucky and worst of all, that God Himself hated us and ordained us to be hewers of wood and drawers of water, forever and ever, world without end.
    Maya Angelou (b. 1928)

It seemed like this was one big Prozac nation, one big mess of malaise. Perhaps the next time half a million people gather for a protest march on the White House green it will not be for abortion rights or gay liberation, but because we’re all so bummed out.
