Telemark Battalion - Crimes Not Prosecuted

Crimes Not Prosecuted

Since the summer of 2009 there were several instances of soldiers from the unit spraypainting Totenkopf figures (in part inspired to resemble a character from comic books and movie – the Punisher) on houses and property belonging to civilian Afghans who soldiers suspected to have ties to anti-government militants. The purpose was to "send a message", to leaders of opposing militants, that the Norwegian soldiers were in charge.

In September 2010, Verdens Gang reported that some soldiers were still using a Totenkopf badge that had been prohibited by the leadership of Norway's military.

The crimes of threatening behaviour and spraypainting the property of others, did not lead to any criminal charges or charges of war crimes.

Famous quotes containing the words crimes and/or prosecuted:

The form of act or thought mattered nothing. The hymns of David, the plays of Shakespeare, the metaphysics of Descartes, the crimes of Borgia, the virtues of Antonine, the atheism of yesterday and the materialism of to-day, were all emanation of divine thought, doing their appointed work. It was the duty of the church to deal with them all, not as though they existed through a power hostile to the deity, but as instruments of the deity to work out his unrevealed ends.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

If courtesans and strumpets were to be prosecuted with as much rigour as some silly people would have it, what locks or bars would be sufficient to preserve the honour of our wives and daughters?
    Bernard Mandeville (1670–1733)
