Prostitutes have very improperly been styled women of pleasure; they are women of pain, or sorrow, of grief, of bitter and continual repentance, without a hope of obtaining a pardon.
Anonymous, U.S. women’s magazine contributor. Weekly Visitor or Ladies Miscellany, p. 85 (January 1804)

O, woman! blinded by custom, look forth upon the world with your own eyes, and see ... things as they are. Consult yourself instead of man,... for in cultivating your own individuality, you are gliding into your true position in society.
Harriet N. Torrey, U.S. women’s magazine contributor. The Genius of Liberty, pp. 81-2 (August 1853)

You don’t know what you might be if you would look beyond the ball, the opera, the fashion-plate—and right over the heads of the perfumed, mustached bipeds who call themselves men and worship at your feet.
Mattie Chappelle, U.S. women’s magazine contributor. The Revolution (April 28, 1870)
