Ted Turner - Rivalry With Murdoch and Fox

Rivalry With Murdoch and Fox

Turner has a long-running grudge with fellow cable magnate Rupert Murdoch. This originated in 1983 when a Murdoch-sponsored yacht collided with Turner's boat during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, causing it to sink 10 km from the finish line. At the post-race dinner, Turner savaged Murdoch, later challenging him to a televised fistfight in Las Vegas. In 2003, Turner challenged Murdoch to a fistfight, and later accused Murdoch of being a "warmonger" as Murdoch was backing President George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq.

Famous quotes containing the words rivalry, murdoch and/or fox:

Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.
    Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)

Writing is like getting married. One should never commit oneself until one is amazed at one’s luck.
    —Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)

Where has it all gone? I remember that twenty years ago there were geese and cranes and ducks and grouse here, clouds of them!... And there are far fewer animals. Wolf and fox are rare, brother, not to mention bears or mink. There used even to be moose!
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
