The airline was established by Luís H. Coulson along with Orlando Botero Escobar and Anibal Obando Echeverri. It started operations on 11 March 1973. Martinair of the Netherlands acquired a 40% stake in Tampa Cargo in 1996. Avianca of Colombia acquired a 100% stake in Tampa Cargo in 2008
