As of the 2001 Indian census, Tambaram had a population of 137,609. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tambaram has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 65%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 74%. In Tambaram, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. The number of people below the poverty line is 9,171. As of the 2011 census, the population was about 196,000. In addition, it has a floating population of more than 100,000, chiefly consisting of people from neighbouring villages who visit Tambaram on work daily. The combined population of the population of Tambaram taluk is more than 1 million. It has an average elevation of 32 metres (104 feet).
