After becoming a winner of New Zealand's Dancing With The Stars in 2009, he came out as gay during an interview with Woman's Weekly and that he lives with his long-term boyfriend, Tim Smith. The couple announced their engagement on February 16, 2011 and wed in a civil union on December 29, 2011. On December 7, 2012, Coffey announced that he will be taking a six-month sabbatical from TVNZ to tour Europe with Smith.
