According to Spikes, his nickname TKO stands for "The Knock Out". Spikes and singer Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins have been dating for over three years. Several of Spikes' jerseys from the early days of his career are preserved in glass at the Dairy Lane restaurant in Sandersville, Georgia.

He was named after Japan's 66th Prime Minister Takeo Miki after Spikes' parents saw a news report. Miki's successor, who was appointed the nation's 67th Prime Minister on December 24, 1976 a week after Takeo was born, was also Takeo (Fukuda). Takeo's younger cousin Brandon Spikes plays football for the New England Patriots.

Spikes has the distinction of playing the most regular season games without a playoff appearance, which reached 213 on November 25, 2012.

Famous quotes containing the word personal:

Oh, what a catastrophe for man when he cut himself off from the rhythm of the year, from his unison with the sun and the earth. Oh, what a catastrophe, what a maiming of love when it was a personal, merely personal feeling, taken away from the rising and the setting of the sun, and cut off from the magic connection of the solstice and the equinox!
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

A man’s personal defects will commonly have with the rest of the world precisely that importance which they have to himself. If he makes light of them, so will other men.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

... while one-half of the people of the United States are robbed of their inherent right of personal representation in this freest country on the face of the globe, it is idle for us to expect that the men who thus rob women will not rob each other as individuals, corporations and Government.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)
