Basketball Retired Uniforms
See also: Syracuse Men's Basketball All-Century TeamLike many sports teams, Syracuse University retires jersey/uniform numbers as a way to honor its athletes. Historically, Syracuse University has restricted the men's basketball team from wearing retired numbers. A perfect example is Carmelo Anthony, who wore #22 in high school. Since the number was already retired at Syracuse, Anthony chose #15 as an alternate upon his arrival. Similarly, Gerry McNamara wore #31 in high school, also retired by Syracuse University (McNamara chose #3 instead). Interestingly, #4 and #20 were both played in the 2009-2010 season.

Famous quotes containing the words basketball, retired and/or uniforms:
“Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.”
—Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
“Business, old man, I said, retire from business, it has retired from you.”
—Samuel Beckett (19061989)
“I place these numbed wrists to the pane
watching white uniforms whisk over
him in the tube-kept
prison
fear what they will do in experiment”
—Michael S. Harper (b. 1938)
