Symphony No. 9 (Bruckner) - Completions of The Fourth Movement

Completions of The Fourth Movement

Although Bruckner suggested using his Te Deum as the finale of the Ninth Symphony, there have been several attempts to complete the symphony with a fourth movement based on Bruckner's surviving manuscripts for the Finale. Indeed, Bruckner's suggestion has been used as a justification for completing the fourth movement, since it shows (according to some scholars such as John A. Phillips), as well of the sheer existence of the Finale fragment, that the composer did not want this work to end with the Adagio.

Famous quotes containing the words fourth and/or movement:

We are playing with fire when we skip the years of three, four, and five to hurry children into being age six.... Every child has a right to his fifth year of life, his fourth year, his third year. He has a right to live each year with joy and self-fulfillment. No one should ever claim the power to make a child mortgage his today for the sake of tomorrow.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)

There is no example in history of a revolutionary movement involving such gigantic masses being so bloodless.
    Leon Trotsky (1879–1940)
