Horn Solo Anecdote
In the first movement, the solo horn enters with the main theme four bars before the "real" recapitulation. Beethoven's disciple Ferdinand Ries recounted:
“ | The first rehearsal of the symphony was terrible, but the hornist did in fact come in on cue. I was standing next to Beethoven and, believing that he had made a wrong entrance, I said, 'That damned hornist! Can't he count? It sounds frightfully wrong.' I believe I was in danger of getting my ears boxed. Beethoven did not forgive me for a long time. | ” |

Famous quotes containing the words horn and/or solo:
“I wanted there should be some there next year.
Of course you did. You left the rest for seed,
And for the backwoods woodchuck. Youre the girl!
A Rams Horn orchid seedpod for a woodchuck
Sounds something like. Better than farmers beans
To a discriminating appetite....”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
“All mothers need instruction, nurturing, and an understanding mentor after the birth of a baby, but in this age of fast foods, fast tracks, and fast lanes, it doesnt always happen. While we live in a society that provides recognition for just about every life eventfrom baptisms to bar mitzvahs, from wedding vows to funeral ritesthe entry into parenting seems to be a solo flight, with nothing and no one to mark formally the new moms entry into motherhood.”
—Sally Placksin (20th century)
