Symbolic Combinatorics

In mathematics, symbolic combinatorics is one of the many techniques of counting combinatorial objects. It uses the internal structure of the objects to derive formulas for their generating functions. This particular theory is due to Philippe Flajolet and Robert Sedgewick.
