Sylvia Jones

Sylvia Jones is a Canadian politician from Ontario. She was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2007 provincial election, representing the riding of Dufferin—Caledon. She is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC). Jones is serving her second term as Dufferin-Caledon’s Member of Provincial Parliament. Her riding of Dufferin-Caledon includes the County of Dufferin and the Town of Caledon. The area is home to multiple towns and villages including Orangeville, Bolton, Shelburne, and East Luther-Grand Valley among others.

After her 2007 election, Jones served as PC Critic for the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and in 2009, PC Leader Tim Hudak gave Jones the added responsibility of Critic for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Her private member’s Bill 94, which would have ensured that Ontario Disability Support Program payments could not be scaled back as a result of Registered Disability Support Program contributions, was eventually adopted by the Liberal government through regulation. After the 2011 provincial election, Jones was appointed to serve as Deputy House Leader and Critic of Government Services. In May 2012, Jones was appointed as the PC Critic for the Ministry of the Attorney General and the PC Caucus Chair.

Jones introduced three private member’s bills in the 40th Parliament. Bill 12, the Helping Volunteers Give Back Act, if enacted would have allowed for volunteers to use an annual criminal record check for multiple volunteer organizations. This would make it easier for people to volunteer for multiple causes. Bill 18, the Respect for Voters Act, if enacted would have required a sitting MPP who wishes to switch political parties to first return to their riding and run in a by-election. It is only fair that voters should have a say in what political party represents their riding, this bill would have ensured voters have the final word on their representation. Bill 23, the Protecting Vulnerable People Against Picketing Act, if enacted would have ensured people living in supportive living homes would not have their homes picketed by striking workers.

Jones and her husband David have lived in Dufferin County since the 1970s, and are the parents of two children.

Famous quotes containing the word jones:

We are told that every American boy has the chance of being president. I tell you that these little boys in the iron cages would sell their chance any day for good square meals and a chance to play.
