Sylvester (singer) - Legacy

Legacy

During the late 1970s, Sylvester gained the monker of the "Queen of Disco." This term would continue to be given to the singer into the 21st century. The English journalist Stephen Brogan later described him as "a star who shined brightly. He only happened once. He was a radical and a visionary in terms of queerness, music and race."

A biography of Sylvester was authored by the sociologist Joshua Gamson and published in 2005. Writing for the London-based LGBT magazine Beige: The Provocative Cultural Quarterly, Stephen Brogan expressed his opinion that while Gamson's biography was well researched, it had a fragmented structure and as such was "not a joy to read".

A thirty-minute documentary about the singer, entitled Unsung Sylvester, was later produced and made available through the website Youtube. Sylvester: Mighty Real, the official feature length documentary on the life and career of Sylvester, is currently in production. The film features interviews with members of Sylvester's family and other artists and musicians who have been inspired by, and worked with Sylvester through the years, but by 2012, Brogan noted that the film's progress had halted.

A film is currently being developed on the life of Sylvester, based upon the book The Fabulous Sylvester by Joshua Gamson. There is no release date as of yet. However, the lead actor has been cast to play Sylvester. Due to confidentiality agreements, the actor has not yet been publicly announced.
