History of Blue Bird School

Sylhet is a very old city with more than 1500 years of history and was once the provincial headquarters of Assam. After the separation in 1947 (became East Pakistan), there were several schools in Sylhet, but not a school of English medium. At that time, some elite people of Sylhet thought to establish an English medium school of KG level.

Then, in 1960, Dr. M Ahmed aggregated Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy and others and took initiative to establish a school named Blue Bird School. Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy was the President, Dr. M Ahmed was the Secretary and other members were Mrs. Fahmida Rashid Chy, Mr. Farruk Rashid Chy, Dr. Krishno Kumar Pal (K.K.Pal), Mr. A Ali, K.U Jaigirdar and others.

Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy and Dr. M Ahmed started the school at the Manik Pir Road by making a tin-shed house with two rooms at their own expense. They sent their own four children to the school and requested all others to do the same. Then, school started with five students on the temporary campus at Manikpir Road, where now is established Lions Eye Hospital. There were only one classroom and one office room and five students were admitted to Nursery Class in 1961. Later, the School management committee went door to door to houses in different areas of Sylhet to collect more students and finally they were able to increase enrollment to eleven in 1961.

At the end of 1961, Dr. M Ahmed and Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy obtained a permanent building by leasing the school premesis from the Ministry through the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, Mr. Samsul Haq Chisti. This premesis was an abandoned two story building at the Naya Sarak Road (opposite the north-east corner of Sylhet Jail). For taking facility from the Government, the school management committee reshuffled by giving chair to the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, Mr. Samsul Haq Chisti, as a President, Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy was Sr. Vice-President and Dr. M Ahmed was the Secretary. They renovated the building. There were total eight rooms. At the ground floor, one hall room at the entrance, where daily assembly was held, one for a Principal and Teachers Room, one for office staff, and one for classroom at the left corner of the building. On the first floor, there were six classrooms. From 1961 to 1971, there were Nursery Class, KG Class, Class 1 (One), Class 2 (Two) and Class 3 (Three).

In 1971, after liberation, the school faced typical crises such as shortage of teachers and students. Some foreign teachers left this country and many students left the school. Specifically, Acting Principal Ms. J Capstared, Mrs. James, Ms. W A Thomas, Ms. S Sowming and others left this country after the war in 1971. Due to the lack of principal, the management committee gave charge to Mrs. Sajeda Khanam as a Principal. Two people, Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy (Vice-President) and Dr. M Ahmed (Secretary), tried hard to save the school. They even paid the salary of teachers and staff from their own pocket.

In 1973, they made a tin-shaded one story building with two rooms at the right side of the main building. Here they started Class 4 (Four).

In 1974, they included Class 5 (Five). Day by day, the schools become renowned and famous English school in Sylhet town. In addition, many students took the school's admission test every year.

In 1976, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), Sylhet Sector, occupied Former Sylhet Sanskrit College campus after the liberation war in 1971. Dr. M Ahmed and Mr. Farruk Rashid Chy met several times with the Director General of BDR, Major General Golam Dastogir and finally convinced General Dastogir to shift the fully armed BDR battalion from the city area to Akhalia Camp. Major General Dastogir took shifted the BDR battalion from the Sanskrit College Campus to the present Akhalia Camp address. He also helped to take over.

Dr. M Ahmed and Mr. Farruk Rashid Chy leased the campus of Blue Bird School from the Land Ministry after trying for two years and received all necessary permission from Education, Defense and other related ministries and authorities. In addition, they leased another campus for Junior Section, which was much closer to the main campus. Blue Bird School got a new address, new campus, and new permanent premises. Since 1977, Blue Bird School has operated from the two present addresses.

In 1977, the School added class 6 (Six). Simultaneously, school authority extended one class every year. Like that way, in 1983, they started class 10 (Ten). Students of Blue Bird School had appeared at the SSC exam for the first time in 1984. Before that, every year many students had to leave this school, because of unavailability to appear at the SSC examination of Board. Later, many students had achieved 1st Division with holding placed on the board, GPA 5+ and many more. Even on the basis of percentage passed, Blue Bird achieved one-hundred percent records on SSC.

In 2006, Blue Bird High School started a college section that means Class XI (Eleven) and Class XII (Twelve). Here also, the students of Blue Bird achieved one-hundred percent records in Science, Arts and other section with GPA 5+.

Some people who established Blue Bird School were, Late, Dr. M Ahmed, Founder Secretary, (from 1961 to 1978), Late, Mr. Aminur Rashid Chy, Founder President, and Late, Mr. Forrukh Rashid Chy, Founder Member. In 1961 and 1971, the school shut down several times. Then, Dr. M Ahmed worked hard to start it again and bore all school expenditures from his own pocket.
