Sydney Opera House Trust

The Sydney Opera House Trust operates and maintains the Sydney Opera House for the Government of New South Wales.

The Trust operates as one of the State's cultural institutions within the Arts portfolio. It is constituted as a body corporate under the Sydney Opera House Trust Act 1961. It has 10 members appointed by the Governor of New South Wales on the nomination of the Minister for the Arts. The Trustees must include at least two persons who have knowledge of or experience in the performing arts. A Trustee holds office for three years and is eligible for reappointment for no more than three consecutive terms.

The Trust’s objectives are:

  • To administer, care for, control, manage and maintain the Sydney Opera House building and site
  • To manage and administer the site as an arts centre and meeting place
  • To promote artistic taste and achievement in all branches of the performing arts
  • To foster scientific research into and to encourage the development of new forms of entertainment and presentation.

The Executive and staff of Sydney Opera House assist the Trust in meeting these objectives.

Famous quotes containing the words opera, house and/or trust:

I wish the opera was every night. It is, of all entertainments, the sweetest and most delightful. Some of the songs seemed to melt my very soul.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)

Those who sit in a glass house do wrong to throw stones about them; besides, the American glass house is rather thin, it will break easily, and the interior is anything but a gainly sight.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)

In order for an individual to partake of the world and contribute to it in a healthy way, he first needs to view that world as a basically kind, friendly, and supportive place. Such an outlook begins to be formed during infancy. It’s essential that the baby establish a fundamental trust in his environment. The infant needs to learn that the world is a nurturing place where his needs will be met.
    Saf Lerman (20th century)
