Swiss National Science Foundation - Funding Schemes

Funding Schemes

Mandated by the Federal Authorities, the SNSF supports basic science in all academic disciplines. It evaluates research proposals submitted by researchers and funds projects selected on the basis of scientific criteria. By awarding fellowships and special grants, the SNSF supports young researchers. The most important schemes of career support are research fellowships, SNSF professorships and Marie Heim-Vögtlin grants (programme for the promotion of women in research).

In addition, the SNSF supports international collaborations with specific programmes and collaborations and it funds conferences and publications (mainly dissertations and habilitations).

Science is a dynamic undertaking directed to lowering the degree of the empiricism involved in solving problems; or, if you prefer, science is a process of fabricating a web of interconnected concepts and conceptual schemes arising from experiments and observations and fruitful of further experiments and observations.
    James Conant (1893–1978)
