"Sweet and Low" fared marginally better in the UK than the previous single, "Brite Side", by peaking two places higher at #57. It also reached #17 on the US Dance Chart. Around the time of the release of "Sweet and Low", Harry embarked on a solo tour in the United States, UK and Australia in early 1990.
The single version was again a remix by the PWL team and it was later included on Chrysalis Records/EMI's 1999 compilation Most of All - The Best of Deborah Harry. It's speculated that the single could have became a bigger hit if it was released as the second UK single instead of "Brite Side", because the former is more dance oriented and UK friendly. Its dance styling helped it become a moderate dance hit in the US, along with a handful of remixes made by producers such as Phil Harding. The song itself is a sugary synth-pop track and the single version of the song has a much more dance feel compared to the original version that appears on the album.
The single is also often praised for its accompanying music video, which is a homage to Harry's fashion and visual influences such as Andy Warhol and Stephen Sprouse. The clip is a colorful and vibrant tribute, and Harry is seen posing and dancing in front of the various colored and animated backdrops. It is considered by many to be one of Harry's finest music videos to date.
