Swedish Railway Signalling - Distant Signals

Distant Signals

Distant signals are informational signals used to give an advance warning about the next home signal. Distant signal are typically located 1,000 to 1,200 meters (3,280 to 3,940 feet) in advance of the home signal in question. The aspects a free-standing distant signal can display are:

Expect stop Expect proceed 80 Expect proceed 40

The signal indication is the same as for the combined aspects in the main signals. A flashing green indicates that the next signal displays stop, a flashing white indicates proceed 80, and two flashing green lights indicates that the next signal displays proceed 40.

Famous quotes containing the words distant and/or signals:

The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd wind slowly o’er the lea,
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
Now fades the glimmering landscape on the sight,
And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,
And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds.
    Thomas Gray (1716–1771)

The term preschooler signals another change in our expectations of children. While toddler refers to physical development, preschooler refers to a social and intellectual activity: going to school. That shift in emphasis is tremendously important, for it is at this age that we think of children as social creatures who can begin to solve problems.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
