Swedish Heavy Metal Scene

In the late 1980s and early 1990s Sweden became one of the major pioneering countries behind death metal. From Swedish death metal emerged the subgenre melodic death metal which sometimes referred to as Gothenburg metal because of the city in Sweden where it became popular. Famous bands include among others Meshuggah, At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Entombed, Dismember (band), Opeth, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy and more. Swedish Bathory (band) is regarded as a pioneer of both black metal and Viking metal and had a huge influence on the Norwegian Black Metal scene.

Famous quotes containing the words heavy, metal and/or scene:

    There is nothing heavier than compassion. Not even one’s own pain weighs so heavy as the pain one feels with someone, for someone, a pain intensified by the imagination and prolonged by a hundred echoes.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

    And, indeed, is there not something holy about a great kitchen?... The scoured gleam of row upon row of metal vessels dangling from hooks or reposing on their shelves till needed with the air of so many chalices waiting for the celebration of the sacrament of food. And the range like an altar, yes, before which my mother bowed in perpetual homage, a fringe of sweat upon her upper lip and the fire glowing in her cheeks.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

    Clear and diminished like a scene cut in cameo
    The lighthouse, and the boat on the beach, and the two shapes
    Of the woman and the man;
    Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950)
