Swarming Motility - Biosurfactant, Quorum Sensing and Swarming

Biosurfactant, Quorum Sensing and Swarming

In some species, swarming motility requires the self-production of biosurfactant to occur. Biosurfactant synthesis is usually under the control of an intercellular communication system called quorum sensing. Biosurfactant molecules are thought to act by lowering surface tension, thus permitting bacteria to move across a surface.

Famous quotes containing the words sensing and/or swarming:

Something was still there, that something that distinguishes an artist from a performer: the revealing of self. Here I be. Not for long, but here I be. In sensing her mortality, we sensed our own.
    Studs Terkel (b. 1912)

    The vines of her arms
didn’t cling to the ends of his clothes,
or did she plant herself in the doorway,
    hurl herself at his feet,
    or utter the word “Stay!”
But as that fool began to go
at the time when it was dark with swarming clouds,
the slim girl blocked her lover’s way
    with only a rising river
made with her flood of tears.
    Amaru (c. seventh century A.D.)
