Svalbard Global Seed Vault - Seed Storage

Seed Storage

The seeds are stored in four-ply sealed envelopes, then placed into plastic tote containers on metal shelving racks. The storage rooms are kept at −18 °C (0 °F). The low temperature and limited access to oxygen will ensure low metabolic activity and delay seed aging. The permafrost surrounding the facility will help maintain the low temperature of the seeds should the electricity supply fail.

Famous quotes containing the words seed and/or storage:

A new word is like a fresh seed sown on the ground of the discussion.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

Many of our houses, both public and private, with their almost innumerable apartments, their huge halls and their cellars for the storage of wines and other munitions of peace, appear to me extravagantly large for their inhabitants. They are so vast and magnificent that the latter seem to be only vermin which infest them.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
