Modes of Data Collection
There are several ways of administering a survey. The choice between administration modes is influenced by several factors, including 1) costs, 2) coverage of the target population, 3) flexibility of asking questions, 4) respondents' willingness to participate and 5) response accuracy. Different methods create mode effects that change how respondents answer, and different methods have different advantages. The most common modes of administration can be summarized as:
- Telephone
- Mail (post)
- Online surveys
- Personal in-home surveys
- Personal mall or street intercept survey
- Hybrids of the above.

Famous quotes containing the words modes of, modes, data and/or collection:
“my brain
Worked with a dim and undetermined sense
Of unknown modes of being; oer my thoughts
There hung a darkness, call it solitude
Or blank desertion.”
—William Wordsworth (17701850)

“Mental health data from the 1950s on middle-aged women showed them to be a particularly distressed group, vulnerable to depression and feelings of uselessness. This isnt surprising. If society tells you that your main role is to be attractive to men and you are getting crows feet, and to be a mother to children and yours are leaving home, no wonder you are distressed.”
—Grace Baruch (20th century)
“What is all wisdom save a collection of platitudes? Take fifty of our current proverbial sayingsthey are so trite, so threadbare, that we can hardly bring our lips to utter them. None the less they embody the concentrated experience of the race and the man who orders his life according to their teaching cannot go far wrong.”
—Norman Douglas (18681952)
