Surfers Paradise Street Circuit - American Open Wheel History

American Open Wheel History

An annual event had been held here since the 1991 IndyCar season. Following the merger of the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series in February 2008, the future of race had originally been secured until 2013 as an IRL IndyCar Series event, however the race was dropped from the calendar after the first demonstration race, and was subsequently picked up by A1GP, severing its eighteen-year history with American open wheel racing.

Famous quotes containing the words american, open, wheel and/or history:

It is as often a weakness in the aged to dictate to the young, as it is folly in the young to slight the warnings of the aged.
    H., U.S. women’s magazine contributor. American Ladies Magazine, pp. 230-3 (May 1828)

I would not unduly praise the virtue of restraint. It is often merely temperamental. But it is not always a sign of coldness. It may be pride. There can be nothing more humiliating than to see the shaft of one’s emotion miss the mark of either laughter or tears. Nothing more humiliating! And this for the reason that should the mark be missed, should the open display of emotion fail to move, then it must perish unavoidably in disgust or contempt.
    Joseph Conrad (1857–1924)

The audience is the most revered member of the theater. Without an audience there is no theater. Every technique learned by the actor, every curtain, every flat on the stage, every careful analysis by the director, every coordinated scene, is for the enjoyment of the audience. They are our guests, our evaluators, and the last spoke in the wheel which can then begin to roll. They make the performance meaningful.
    Viola Spolin (b. 1911)

The greatest honor history can bestow is that of peacemaker.
    Richard M. Nixon (1913–1995)
