Surf FM broadcasts on 87.6 MHz (FM) using three local coverage FM transmitters located in Seaford (in the City of Frankston), Cranbourne and Berwick (both in the City of Casey). The station is licenced to broadcast by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
These neighbouring cities of Frankston and Casey are located in the outer suburban south-east of Metropolitan Melbourne, Australia's second largest metropolitan area.
Located 40 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD (Central Business District), Frankston is often referred to as the "Bay City" and "Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula".
The name "Surf FM" was selected to identify as closely as possible with being located in a bayside city. It was also selected to distinguish the brand from other "watermark" names used by various coastal radio stations across Australia like Sea FM, Bay FM, Wave FM and Coast FM.
