Sun and Moon (Middle-earth) - Moon

Moon

The Maia Tilion was chosen to guide the vessel of the Moon.

"Isil was first wrought and made ready, and first rose into the realm of the stars, and was the elder of the new lights, as was Telperion of the Trees."

Names of the Moon amongst the Elves included Isil or The Sheen, a name given to it by the Vanyar; Ithil, the common name for the Moon in Sindarin, as seen in Minas Ithil (later Minas Morgul) and the Gondorian province of Ithilien; and RĂ¡na, or The Wayward, a name given to the Moon by the Noldor.

A poetic name for the Moon was The Silver Flower, and Gollum referred to it as The White Face.

The Moon was more highly valued than the Sun by the Elves, both because it came from the Elder Tree, and because it rose first.

Famous quotes containing the word moon:

I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night.
    Irving Berlin (1888–1989)

Romeo. Lady, by yonder blessed moon I vow,
That tips with silver all these fruit tree tops—
Juliet. O, swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

The quarrel of the sparrows in the eaves,
The full round moon and the star-laden sky,
And the loud song of the ever-singing leaves,
Had hid away earth’s old and weary cry.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
