Suicides in South Korea - Victims

Victims

Suicide is the most common cause of death for those under 40 in South Korea. However, it is a problem much more prevalent in the older populace. In 2003 the suicide rate for people aged 60-74 was about 4.4 higher than for the 15-29 age group, and the suicide rate for those over 75 was over 10.6 as big. More than two thirds of the suicides are committed by males (in 2003, the ratio was about 2:1).

Two most common methods of suicide in the period of 1993 to 2003 was poisoning and hanging, accounting for about 2/3 of all suicides.

Famous quotes containing the word victims:

The Harmless Torturers. In the Bad Old Days, each torturer inflicted severe pain on one victim. Things have now changed. Each of the thousand torturers presses a button, thereby turning the switch once on each of the thousand instruments. The victims suffer the same severe pain. But none of the torturers makes any victim’s pain perceptibly worse.
    Derek Parfit (b. 1943)

I don’t see black people as victims even though we are exploited. Victims are flat, one- dimensional characters, someone rolled over by a steamroller so you have a cardboard person. We are far more resilient and more rounded than that. I will go on showing there’s more to us than our being victimized. Victims are dead.
    Kristin Hunter (b. 1931)

Whether in the field of health, education or welfare, I have put my emphasis on preventive rather than curative programs and tried to influence our elaborate, costly and ill- co-ordinated welfare organizations in that direction. Unfortunately the momentum of social work is still directed toward compensating the victims of our society for its injustices rather than eliminating those injustices.
    Agnes E. Meyer (1887–1970)
