Suburban Baths (Pompeii) - Structure of The Suburban Baths

Structure of The Suburban Baths

The entrance to the Baths is through a long corridor that leads into the dressing room. Upon excavation of the Baths only one set of dressing rooms was revealed and has led to speculation by archaeologists that both men and women shared this facility. This dressing room (known as apodyterium) is where archaeologists discovered erotic wall paintings in the 1980s. The dressing room then led to the tepidarium (lukewarm room), followed by the calidarium (hot room).

Famous quotes containing the words structure of the, structure of, structure, suburban and/or baths:

Women over fifty already form one of the largest groups in the population structure of the western world. As long as they like themselves, they will not be an oppressed minority. In order to like themselves they must reject trivialization by others of who and what they are. A grown woman should not have to masquerade as a girl in order to remain in the land of the living.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

I really do inhabit a system in which words are capable of shaking the entire structure of government, where words can prove mightier than ten military divisions.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

Each structure and institution here was so primitive that you could at once refer it to its source; but our buildings commonly suggest neither their origin nor their purpose.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

When I consider the clouds stretched in stupendous masses across the sky, frowning with darkness or glowing with downy light, or gilded with the rays of the setting sun, like the battlements of a city in the heavens, their grandeur appears thrown away on the meanness of my employment; the drapery is altogether too rich for such poor acting. I am hardly worthy to be a suburban dweller outside those walls.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

After the baths and bowel-work, he was dead.
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)
