Substance (Joy Division Album) - Cover

Cover

The cover features Wim Crouwel's New Alphabet typeface. An error appears to occur in the characters utilised; the letters used actually spell "Subst1mce", rather than "Substance", although Brett Wickens who worked on this cover whilst a partner at Saville Associates, claims this was for aesthetic reasons. The 1991 cover was different, featuring new art.

Famous quotes containing the word cover:

Every individual ought to know at least one poet from cover to cover: if not as a guide through the world, then as a yardstick for the language.
    Joseph Brodsky (b. 1940)

Every man alone is sincere. At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins. We parry and fend the approach of our fellow-man by compliments, by gossip, by amusements, by affairs. We cover up our thought from him under a hundred folds.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

You may call a jay a bird. Well, so he is, in a measure—because he’s got feathers on him, and don’t belong to no church, perhaps; but otherwise he is just as much a human as you be. And I’ll tell you for why. A jay’s gifts and instincts, and feelings, and interests, cover the whole ground. A jay hasn’t got any more principle than a Congressman.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
