Su Beng - Pen Name

Pen Name

He first used Su Beng as his pen name for Taiwan’s 400 Year History in 1962. In choosing his pen name, he wanted to express his motivation for writing Taiwan’s 400 Year History. Su Beng believes that once the Taiwanese people understand their unique history, they will be able to know who they are, what they want for themselves and their nation. The two characters which make up his name are 史 (Hoklo: sú, Mandarin: shĭ)- history and 明 (Hoklo: bêng, Mandarin: míng)-clear. Taken together, these two characters mean, “history clearly”, “to know history clearly.”

Famous quotes containing the word pen:

It was a fatal day when the public discovered that the pen is mightier than the paving-stone, and can be made as offensive as the brickbat. They at once sought for the journalist, found him, developed him, and made him their industrious and well-paid servant. It is greatly to be regretted, for both their sakes.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

Prove that ever I lose more blood with love than I will get again with drinking, pick out mine eyes with a ballad-maker’s pen and hang me up at the door of a brothel-house for the sign of blind Cupid.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
