Areas of Influence
Though SFI is active throughout India, it is most prominent in those three states that have enjoyed communist governments historically. These are the states of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. The SFI has a strong base in the universities all over Kerala and West Bengal. It has a few other strongholds which include Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, University of Hyderabad, Osmania University, and University of Rajasthan.
The SFI includes students from all the academic institutions of India - from schools to colleges, from professional institutions to research academies. In Tripura there is a special sub-organisation for tribal students, named the Tribal Students Union.

“The point is, that the function of the novel seems to be changing; it has become an outpost of journalism; we read novels for information about areas of life we dont knowNigeria, South Africa, the American army, a coal-mining village, coteries in Chelsea, etc. We read to find out what is going on. One novel in five hundred or a thousand has the quality a novel should have to make it a novelthe quality of philosophy.”
—Doris Lessing (b. 1919)

“If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life.”
